Ready to take your Chinese/English consecutive interpreting skills to the next level this spring? I am offering a 16-hour short course in March - April, 2024, delivered live via Zoom, with three key objectives:
Mastering note-taking techniques through hands-on exercises to handle speech segments of 2 to 3 minutes long
Enhancing knowledge and vocabulary related to the most relevant topic areas of conference interpreting assignments, such as business, economy, and trade
Helping participants identify individual strengths and areas for improvement with personalized, actionable advice

Course Format
Meets twice a week for 4 weeks, totalling 16 contact hours
Live Zoom classes in a small, interactive group of no more than 10 students with personal attention and feedback
Instruction and exercises for both C-to-E and E-to-C consecutive interpretation

Yes, participants will receive a certificate of completion after successfully finishing the 16-hour course, which is approved by the ATA for 10 CE Points.

4. What previous training or experience is required before enrolling in this course?
No prior training or experience in interpreting is required, although previous experience can be beneficial.
Regardless of previous training or work experience in consecutive interpreting, participants are encouraged to take this self-paced, on-demand Note-Taking for Consecutive Interpretation course offered by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) at Monterey and taught by Professor Laura Burian so that everyone comes in with some basic understanding of note-taking and other important concepts such as deliberate practice, active listening and deverbalizing.
This course is currently available at a discounted rate of US$59 (regular US$99).
5. What are the technical requirements for taking this course on Zoom?
Stable internet connection
A computer equipped with a webcam (tablets are not suitable)
A USB-connected headset with a boom microphone, or an external tabletop microphone (internal laptop microphones are discouraged)
Pen and paper (or notepad) for note-taking during consecutive interpreting exercises
A smartphone for recording your own interpretations and taking pictures of your notes for feedback and analysis
6. Will classes be recorded?
Select sessions may be recorded for internal review, but recordings will not be publicly accessible.
Attendance is crucial. Missing more than three live sessions will result in ineligibility for the completion certificate and full CE points.
7. Does this course teach simultaneous interpreting skills?
No. This course is focused exclusively on consecutive interpreting, although it helps to build many skills applicable to simultaneous interpreting as well, such as active listening, analytical processing and effective delivery of the message.
